St Lucia Weather in June

By Kirk Elliott – BadAss St Lucia Photographer Sharing My Saint Lucia with the World…

Introduction

This St Lucia Weather in June overview is based on 12 years of data from the Saint Lucia Meteorological Office (2005 – 2016) as well as my personal observation of St Lucia’s weather. As a photographer I am acutely aware of the weather since 95% of my photography is produced outdoors. I have created a weather review like this for each month of the year and I hope that you find it an invaluable guide as you plan your Saint Lucia vacation and you ask that burning question: “What will the weather in St Lucia be like when I get down there???”

…and should you have any questions after reading this weather review simply shoot me an email by clicking the email link at the end of this article; or post a comment in the comments section below to let me know what you think, or to ask about anything else about St Lucia that you would really like to know…

St Lucia Weather in June

St Lucia weather in June brings with it the joy of rain. Unlike more northerly and southerly countries that enjoy four seasons, St Lucia only has two – a wet and a dry season. June to November is the rainy season in St Lucia, while December to May is the dry season. But this does not mean that the rains suddenly start coming in June as the seasons tend to gently merge into each other. So June usually starts out similar to St Lucia weather in May.

St Lucia June Weather at a Glance

  • Longest days of the year are in June…
  • Start of the rainy season – but there’s never rain to ruin your vacation in any June on record…
  • The Trade Winds are not as strong as earlier in the year…
  • 12+ hours of daylight…
  • Brilliant sunsets are still the norm…

St Lucia June Temperatures

During this 12 year period June had an average high temperature of 30.7° C / 87.3° F and an average low temperature of 25.5° C / 77.9° F. This made June the third hottest month of the year for the period under review. However this is not noticeable as the temperature difference from one month to the next is never even as much as 1/2°C.
By June the Trade Winds are not blowing as strong as earlier in the year and the hillsides generally remain quite dry even when some welcome rain starts coming in.

St Lucia June Sunshine

Interestingly enough for the period under review June had one of the shortest periods of bright sunshine with an average of 247 total hours for the month or approximately 8.2 hours per day. This could be due to the fact that while there wasn’t a great deal of rain there were probably extended periods of overcast skies.

While the period of bright sunlight was lower in June than in the adjoining months, June has the longest hours between sunrise and sunset with June 21st, the summer solstice being the longest day of the year. In 2016 June enjoyed nearly 13 hours between sunrise and sunset compared to December 2015, the month with the shortest hours between sunrise and sunset which was 11 hours and 15 minutes on average.

It is interesting to note that there isn’t as much as 2 hours difference between the longest and shortest days of the year down here. Another interesting thing to note about our weather is that regardless of the month there are no long hours of twilight and the difference between night and day in the evenings is as if someone turns off a light switch. One minute it’s bright and then the next it’s dark … quite dark!

Pink Before The Dark

…However quite often when there are clouds up in the sky they will light up in a rainbow of pinks and yellows and orange 15 to 20 minutes after the sun drops below the horizon so it’s a good idea to stick around after the sunset for this beautiful light show. And remember to shoot some pictures, but you’ve gotta be quick as the show can be over in as little as 5 minute and hardly ever lasts longer than about 10.

Sunrise & Sunset

In 2016 the sun rose at 5:35 AM and set at 6:27 PM for a total 12:52 hours of daylight and by the time June 30th rolled round the sun was rising at 5:40 AM and setting at 6:34 PM for a total of 12:54 hours of daylight. Also from June 14th to June 27th there were 12:55 hours of daylight each day, coinciding with the summer solstice mentioned above.

If your vacation overlaps into the next month you can expect St Lucia weather in July to be similar to what obtains in May.

St Lucia Rainfall in June

The average monthly rainfall for June from 2005 – 2016 was 117 mm / 4.6 inches. Looking back at St Lucia weather in May with 75.4 mm / 3.1 inches we can see that this is a big rainfall jump. However because the ground can be quite parched by June there tends to be a local sigh of relief when the the June rains come along. While the rainfall jump is high, 4.6 inches of rain over the course of a month is an insignificant amount that will in no form or fashion impact your St Lucia vacation experience.

St Lucia Hurricane Season

Not only is June to November the rainy season in St Lucia, it is also the hurricane season! However because St Lucia is in the southern Caribbean we are not as impacted by hurricanes as much as the more northern islands. Also hurricanes rarely ever form this early in the year. Regarding the weather at this time if your vacation continues beyond June you can expect St Lucia weather in July to continue along a pattern similar to June’s, especially regarding rainfall.

St Lucia June Weather Summary

Thinking of St Lucia weather in June you can expect beautiful Caribbean weather with a lot of sunshine interspersed with tropical rain showers that serve to cool things down rather than dampen your spirits. And while we would have just entered the official hurricane season there is little chance of you experiencing one in June.
